Pulse of the Twin Cities
Taking their name from a character in a book by the hard living Charles Bukowski was good choice for this band. Like the Bukowski character, the music is abrasive, unpredictable, and analytical. The impetuous music has a tendency to rise up and then stop on a dime when you are not expecting it. It's not grunge, metal or what would generally be thought of as hard rock. It's in your face in it's own unique way, with stream of conscious-style lyrics that would make Kerouac and the beat generation proud. It's as if the singer is walking around in a permanent state of "being", enabling him to feel dark vibes in the air that ordinary people are unable to sense. The atmosphere goes from dreamlike to a bad acid trip and back to surreality.
This sound like the production work of one Steve Albini. The quick twists and turns that the songs take on a whim could also be compared to Guided By Voices, though the two bands set completely different tones. The thinking man's aggresion on the disc sets a sort of strangely dpressed vibe. Perhaps this is how a hardcore addict feels after days with no dope. Very odd and very unique.
