SMALLER-SIZED JAR WITH AN IDEA

CMJ Music Monthly Issue 657- March 13, 2000
Henry Chinaski is the semi autobiographical character in the writings of Charles Bukowski.   The band H.Chinaski, aside from drawing inspiration for its name from the ...more

Rating: 5.6
In an attempt to break away from the longish, often epic Pitchfork review, Ibelieve I've come upon a technical solution. See, we Pitchforkians aim to pleaseeveryone-- especially the Attention Deficit Disordered types that have troublereading anything longer a want-ad...more

Juxtapoz #26 May/June 2000
As victims of the present day, we often find ourselves mistaking slick production and gross editing techniques for "tight music".   H.Chinaski are tight in a more realistic sense, not via over gloss but rather through creativity and dedication.   Minimal on the lyrical ...more

What a surprise here!   I had never heard of H.Chinaski before I received this disc in the mail and I have no idea why.   This disc shows a great deal of skill involved and fantastic creativity.   I find that ...more

Hanging Like a Hex #14
First things first, these fellas picked a hell of a good name.   But with a name like that they ought to be playing tougher music just because 'ol Henry was ...more

Held Like Sound #7
H.Chinaski plays a mellow, lo-fi slant of angular rock.   The use of sparse keyboards is a great accompaniment for the cryptic lyrics. The emotional vocals are half screamed, half sung and boast some great, subtle melodies.   Standout tracks are...more

Summary:   With the band named after Bukowski's Barfly alter-ego, and album cover art by Shepard Fairey, the music could suck and still sell.   But, it doesn't (suck, that is ).

At first, I thought that H.Chinaski was from the "angry young man" school of indie rock, to be ...more

Pulse of the Twin Cities
H.Chinaski is a character from a book.   He lives in L.A. in a rented bungelow, has crummy jobs and drinks too much.   When he wanders out into the streets, he thrills and shudders at the life that teems up and down Alvarado Avenue.   Passing the bars...more

Shredding Paper #6
Indie rock with a few dissonant noises in the music, and lots of screaming in the vocals.   Some would call this emo, and it certainly falls into that category from...more

Reglar Wiglar
H.Chinaski have been playing together for ten years and they're from Wisconsin-no small feat.   What this record reminds me of almost immediately, is ...more

Under the Volcano #56
Almost AmRep sounding (but not nearly as well-recorded) with slinty guitar chords and of course dynamics.   I could see this band fitting in well on some of my favorite labels actually (Lovitt, Cargo, AmRep, etc.)   This is a very good self-release.

Chin Music
I'll admit it. I first judged this album by it's cover. A tight Marxist solidarity fist is raised to the air with a red-star in the background. The animation has a touch of Soviet-style propaganda color and hue from the post-Bolshevik revolution phase. I can't help it, I'm sensitive to ...more

Pulse of the Twin Cities
Taking their name from a character in a book by the hard living Charles Bukowski was good choice for this band.   Like the Bukowski character, the music is ...more

Monster #4
This disc and this band are like heroin to me.   I always want more.   And it's a good thing.   Aside from the fact that there are...more
